Armory 2011 Vernissage

One of the worlds 'big four' contemporary art fairs opened this week in NYC. 'The Armory Show' Vernissage drew a huge crowd who were treated to a veritable supermarket style plethora of world art. Pommery Champagne was in hot demand as enthusiastic art patrons vigourlsy disccused their respective experiences. Everything from $25 - $425,000 (and in a few cases a bit more) was on offer, with all the big gallery names offering their staple diet of superstars, although no Damien Hirst was on show at Whitecube. A highlight was the Alexander Calder sculpture sold by Hollis Taggart Gallery, Pier 92. A strong showing from European Galleries generated an interesting mix including large works by Norbert Bisky. Just down the road The Volta Show Vernissage drew positive reviews and strong sales to selected galleries.  Of note was the return of larger works to both shows, it would seem that the gallerist trend now mirrors recent gains made in global auction rooms.
