Tabatha Forbes, Takeaways, Opens 31st October, 6pm @ BCA

Tabatha Forbes
Takeaways
31 October - 12 November

Takeaways is predominantly concerned with the early barter between the indigenous Pacific Islanders and the early European ships: specifically the taking away and the leaving behind of certain objects /plants /animals.   Significantly these items once left or taken are also removed of their original context, becoming transient, without purpose or place.    Inevitably their importance, culturally, spiritually, practically and environmentally is also in part, lost.
Takeaways is not about the items themselves (they are consciously not titled in full) nor is it a cultural statement about the implied injustice of exchange but the series considers the shift in perception, of value, use and environmental impact over time and a query over whether or not anything has changed at all.
